Pantai Cenang Urban & Rural Green Belt

LOCATION : Jalan Pantai Cenang urban belt (from Morac until Simpang Jalan Cenang – Jalan Tengah) and the paddy field rural belt along the left and right of it until paddy field museum.

Objectives

To create a continuous green belt area along the Cenang rural village and urban tourist areas.

The Green Belt

Characteristics of the Green Belt:

  • is continuous and linear;
  • combines recreation for people with habitats for wildlife;
  • can take advantage of land along existing canals, disused space, water culverts and other linear service routes along urban areas;
  • can follow natural occurring rivers and streams;
  • can be based on narrower rights of way such as footpaths and cycle ways;
  • is most effective as part of a network that combines principles of conservation biology and landscape planning

Benefits

For people, the green belt improves / enhances:

  • tranquility and contact with nature;
  • recreation and outdoor exercise;
  • green contract with urban surroundings;
  • micro-climate;
  • traffic-, noise reduction along urban areas;
  • outdoor classrooms for environmental education;
  • scenic views;
  • added value to property along the green belt;
  • eco-tourism appeal of the island;
  • a sense of belonging for the residents and community that dwells along the green belt;
  • training and employment of local guides (preferably from the adjacent village) in bird watching, paddy field ecology , rice cultivation process and kampung life and culture.
  • For wildlife, the green belt improves / enhances:
  • biodiversity;
  • habitat quality and extent;
  • sources of food and shelter;
  • breeding grounds;
  • migration and movement;
  • in birdlife and bat life population will see a corresponding decrease in mosquito and rice pest insect population;

Components

People/Wildlife friendly trees, shrubs and plant life. Several pondoks to rest at. Hardy outdoor furniture for scenic stops along green belt. Range of signage that include interpretive information on plant life, birdlife and other wildlife. Information on human made structures and cultural features. Disable friendly areas. Trail guides and birdlife checklist.

Phase I

Clean up and planting work with suitable trees to be initially done thin the area along the urban section of Jalan Pantai Cenang. This includes the main road and pockets of unused land space. All hotels and tourist frequented areas should be given attention.

Phase II

Clean up works and planting work are to be carried out along rural setting. Special focus being paid to scenic areas, bird observation areas and cultural areas along the green belt. It is important that there is a continuous green belt leading/inviting the urban section into the rural section.

Committee of local residents / stakeholders and relevant authorities must be set up to gain their support from the very beginning.

This group could be called the “Pantai Cenang/Kedawang Community Action Comitee” which will be represented at the Langkawi LA 21 network.

The group will be responsible for:

  • Incorporating public participation and consultation in the early stages and in subsequent reviews at regular intervals
  • Accommodating public planting days in the green belts
  • Incorporating post construction evaluation by users and the local community
  • Encouraging monitoring and control of use by local residents
  • Accommodating sponsorship and/or adoption of green belt segments

Management

Committee of local residents / stakeholders and relevant authorities must be set up to gain their support from the very beginning.
